Important: antivirus software causing problems?

After installation you suddenly experience problems (no results screen or no audio), your antispyware and/or antivirus (AV) software may have deleted or unintentionally prevented a file from working. This is an annoying problem currently being experienced by users of Norton 360 (or some AV programs eg. Kaspersky). If this happens you may have to re-install the program.

If your AV program blocks or otherwise interferes with a program installation you may end up with a failed install. That is why we recommend you disable any AV software for the duration of the installation. Remember to turn it back on again afterwards.

Note: The installer program might trigger false alerts from some AV programs eg. Kaspersky and others. Please be assured that these warnings are false positives - the installer and software package is virus-free.

If you need to reinstall the program

Disable the AV software on your computer just for the installation. To do this, right-click the icon for the AV software in the notification area, and then click Exit or Disable.

Remember to turn it back on again afterwards.

Installing the software (if the disc does not autoplay)

If the disc does not autoplay, please do the following:

  • Although normally not necessary, it is a good idea to disable your antivirus software for the install duration as this could interfere with the installation. Just remember to turn it back on again.(See point above if you experience any problems afterwards).
  • Insert disc into your drive.
  • Go to My Computer.
  • Find your CD/DVD drive.
  • Right click, select Explore, so that you can see all of the files inside.
  • Open the file called Install.
  • Please be patient while the files unpack. This may take several minutes.

It may seem as though there is nothing happening, but wait the next window will appear.
Follow the instructions on the screen.

Error message: .NET Framework required

This message usually occurs with XP users who don’t have Service Pack 2 installed which is part of an update that your XP should have.

You will need to update your XP machine especially with Service Pack 2 as the quiz needs this. During the updates, Windows will install all of the Service Packs you need including SP2.

I cannot hear any sound at all

Can you hear audio when you play any other CD/DVD on your computer? Is your sound card working? Please visit this page for help with Windows sound problems.

I cannot hear any sound on the Study Module

The audio for the study module can be heard by selecting the Audio file inside the Audio Control window. For example under the Chapter 2 section, (see image below) you have a list: 1. Introduction | 2. The changing Role of Women | 3. Migration to Britain | 4. Children, Family and Young People.

If you cannot see the Audio Window, then you do not have Flash Player installed. To install the latest version, please visit Adobe Flash Player.

After installing the Flash Player, restart the Life in the UK Test Study Module. You should be able to see the Audio Control Panel.

The Practice Tests won't work

If you are using Windows XP you need to ensure that you have updated your OS with Service Pack 2 or over. Without it the practice tests won't run. You can Google the words "XP service pack" or go to the Microsoft website to search for the latest updates. It is very important to keep your system up to date as there may be critical security updates.

If you are using Windows 7 or Vista - your antispyware and antivirus software may have interfered with the installation process. Follow the instructions above to re-install the software.

How do I check if there's an update for the software? (Ver 1.0.0.10)

You have to be running version 1.0.0.10 to do this. You can find the version number on the disc or once installed, at the bottom of the program screen.

1. Close the software if you have this open.
2. Go to Start menu icon located on bottom left-hand side of your PC (see image below).
3. Go to All Programs
4. Look for a yellow folder called Life in the UK Test.
5.Open the folder called 'Get Updates'.
6. Click on 'Check for New Update'.
7. If there are new updates, these will be downloaded and installed.
